Wall wins Lighthouse award
By Stewart McIntosh
ONE of Scotland’s most kenspeckle property figures has been presented
with the 2008 Lighthouse Achievement Award.
Ian Wall, who recently retired after seven years as CEO of EDI Group,
received his prize at a presentation ceremony on Friday, 22 August,
after a lecture, delivered by himself, entitled Working spaces: Living
spaces.
The award is presented annually by The Lighthouse, Scotland’s national
Architecture and Design Centre, to an individual or organisation for
their contribution to the built environment.
An exhibition of winning
and shortlisted projects is on show at The Lighthouse until 3 September.
Edinburgh Park was one of Ian Wall's achievements

Morag Bain, director of ACCESS to Architecture and chair of the judging
panel, said: “Throughout his years with City of Edinburgh Council and
EDI Group, Ian showed a great determination to ensure quality
developments and commitment to raising the profile of good architecture.
We felt that as he moved on from EDI it was an appropriate time to
recognise the valuable contribution he has made to Scotland’s
architectural landscape through his bold commissioning policy.”
While working for EDI, Wall helped to deliver a number of major
developments in Edinburgh including Edinburgh Park, described by the
British Council of Offices as “one of the best business parks in Europe”.
He created and established the 15-year programme to reinvent
Craigmillar, one of Scotland’s most deprived areas.
“Making good
buildings is not difficult if the client has the commitment and
determination to do so and has a design team similarly committed,” he
says.
John Mark Di Ciacca, the acting chief executive of EDI, said: “Ian’s
contribution to the built environment is well known among those who have
worked with him. The award reflects the huge personal commitment and
energy he demonstrated during his years with EDI.
"Most recently, Ian’s commitment to exploring shared surfaces has
permitted EDI to develop an entirely new approach to modelling
successful streets and public realm.”

Five join team at buoyant Space Solutions
THE workspace specialist Space Solutions says it is bucking the trend
of “perceived market conditions” in the commercial property sector by
hiring more staff as part of its continued expansion across the Central
Belt.
It has added five more staff to further strengthen the architecture
and design expertise of the 130-strong team, and the recruitment comes
as the firm has continued to invest heavily in ongoing staff
development, with a series of successful project wins.
Director Derek Binnie said: “The success of a business can partly be
measured by the quality of the people it attracts. Our continued

growth also depends on getting the best out of our existing staff. So
we are also extremely pleased that other colleagues are celebrating new
landmarks with the company.”
The key staff changes and developments include: William Campbell, who
has extensive experience in the public and commercial sectors, has been
recruited as an architectural technician in the Glasgow office; Mhairi
Kennedy is another new appointment in Glasgow, where she will be an
interior designer and technical space planner; Richard Gray has joined
the Glasgow team as a relocations manager; Mary McKinnon has joined the
Edinburgh office as an interior designer; and Stuart Gough joins as an
experienced architectural assistant in the Edinburgh office.
